How Propane Can Help TARTA and Toledo Go Green

A recent meeting between TARTA Deputy CEO Rick Bailey and Gary Bozigar, Chair of the Ohio Propane Gas Association’s Autogas Committee, opened the door for a practical conversation about propane’s role in public transportation. During the discussion, Bozigar learned that TARTA is open to purchasing propane vehicles as the agency evaluates cost-effective, reliable, and cleaner transportation options.

The conversation gave OPGA a valuable opportunity to better understand TARTA’s fleet needs and to highlight how propane vehicles can support affordable, dependable transit service for Ohio communities.

TARTA continues to grow, with ridership increasing for the fifth straight year across fixed-route buses, TARTA Flex, and TARTA Move paratransit service. As demand grows, propane gives TARTA another practical fleet option that can lower fuel and maintenance costs while keeping vehicles reliable for daily service.

Other Ohio transit fleets already showcase propane’s promise: Laketran reports approximately $455,000 in annual taxpayer savings from propane buses, John Glenn International Airport saves about $200,000 per year with propane shuttle buses, and Geauga Transit has used propane paratransit vehicles to cut costs while improving winter performance as well. For a system focused on affordability, accessibility, and cleaner transportation, propane offers a ready-now solution that can help TARTA expand service without putting extra pressure on riders or local taxpayers.
